Sounds like metal if you flick it doesn't pick up on a magnet. It's like a small bowl. Up close in light you can see what looks like quartz or some glassy mineral all over it. I found it in a heavily wooded area near the river in West TN and have held on to it for awhile now. Any info on a rock like this would be appreciated.

Known as cupstones, anvil stones, pitted cobbles, discoidal stone, mortar, nutting stone, among other names.

I used the various terms from my last post and the best matches I found were for ...

Native American Nutting Stones

[ The examples shown here were described as having been found in the Midwest ]

However, my current favorite is ...

Discoidal or Chunkey Stones

Which are often described as prehistoric and were used in some type of Native American game

Yeah the old timers sure had their pick of all the good artifacts in Illinois. I lived in Kewanee back in the 60s and my mother was cub scout den mother. She became acquainted with a fella if memory serves me worked at the post office. Well in conversation he found out about us little cub scouts through her and he was a very avid artifact hunter and invited her to bring us over for some education on Native Americans and see his collection. From what I remember every cabinet was full of artifacts and his living room walls were covered in framed displays. I was so fascinated with what he had collected. The thing I still remember out of all his fascinating and wonderful things he found was this pistol with spears I now know as a F. Reuthe's trap gun. I still remember him saying he took some boy scouts out on a hunt to teach them how to find aritifacts. He said the were all searching along the bank of a creek and all the scouts were ahead of him trying to find artifacts and everyone of them walked right over the iron handle of this bizarre gun sticking out of the mud. Funny how some things you never forget.
