Weird Local Token? ** UPDATED **

Found this out back at location that used to be under a chicken house.

One one side I can read "IN TRADE" and on the other side it reads "Sebastopol" which is the town where we live. I can't any other letters or numbers and it is slightly larger than a quarter. I think there may some significance in the square hole in terms of dating this, but I'm not sure if this could even be considered a token.

Maybe I should put this on "What is it?"

Re: Weird Local Token?

Sure looks like a token to me! The square hole may have been made by an old square nail which means the token is old. Nice find, I really like tokens! HH, Mike

Re: Weird Local Token?

This might be a possibility:

Obverse: THE BUCKHORN / MELLO & MELLO / SEBASTOPOL, CAL.
Reverse: GOOD FOR / 10¢ / IN TRADE
Aluminum
Octagonal
Beaded border (Can't see any indication of that in the photo, though.)
25mm (That's slightly larger than a quarter, which is 24.3mm.)

Re: Weird Local Token?

PBK you have a great resource on Tokens I guess. There's no ridge and the metal seems to be pretty cheap.

I don't think it would survive any more cleaning, but I am going to a local detector club meeting Tuesday and supposedly there is a very knowledgeable Token collector who will be there. I'll show it to him and see what he says.

Thanks for the replies.

Found out from the purchaser that the ID was wrong. I am trying to get the details from him. The following is from my memory from a discussion at the Coin Popper Christmas Dinner two nights ago. I'll be correcting myself later when he replies.

This token is apparently unlisted and was from about 1905-1907 from the Palace Saloon in Sebastopol, CA. The 5 cent version is listed, but the 10 cent version, which what I sold, is not.

I think it is worth a bit more than what I sold it for, but the purchaser is pretty happy so that is fine. He says to me, "Find one in better condition and I'll give you $100." So now I will be digging ALL the signals where that old chicken house was torn down.

Who woulda thunk?

Great token! Good luck on finding another. I have found two store tokens from the same store. After finding the first one, I never thought about finding another just like it...but it can happen! ;)

Nana :)

Nice find, if it looks like a token, feels like a token, then it must be a token.

Thanks for posting your find.

Finally got the description of the token from the token collector who bought it:

"Here is a discription of the token you found in Sebastopol

PALACE SALOON / SEBASTOPOL, / CAL. // GOOD FOR / 10 / CENTS / IN TRADE

al oct 27 barly ag condition

1899 post card shows j.w. johnson Palace Saloon Santa Rosa St. Sebastopol,ca.

Listed piece in Kappen suppliment k-29 al round 24mm good for 5c in trade. and in

Duane Feisel's California Saloon Tokens Sebastopol # 2 where he has a picture of the 5c round piece."

According to the buyer the 10 cent one hasn't been listed - so I guess that makes it rare. Maybe not. I was told that I should try mixed mode on the XLT and go over the area again and since it is wet now maybe I can get some more depth. I think that chicken manure in the ground is hard on aluminum, but who knows, maybe I can find another one in good condition. Wish me luck!
