Weird fancy piece not shur on?

Found this on one site I've been detecting for couple weeks and been finding stuff from late 1790s like my 1797 cartwheel to 1940s, it was tore down i was not shur of this piece it fancy design on it looks like leaves with chains links, and looks like a key hole but not completely so if anyone can help out id and maybe date it , i appreciate it thanks!

Looks like an item that had a center piece that was pealed off / removed.

I've found a piece similar to yours with another part that goes with it. I'll send you my pic.

The top piece in a little beat up but looks similar in that it has the hole in the center and a slit in it. The piece next to it has a gear in it on the shaft. Maybe part of an old watch or clock.? Not sure.mind rang up 82 on the Pro. Good luck.

That object is the top of an antique oil-lamp's tank, with its wick-adjuster handle, shaft, and the toothed wheel whose points stuck into the (round-bodied) wick and moved it up or down when the wick-adjuster handle was turned. The photo below shows a similar one.

The round-bodied wick was common until about the 1860s, when the ribbon-bodied wick became more popular, because it gave more light.
