Anyone know what this is? My first reaction was it looked like an inlet or outlet from a gas mask?

It was dug up near these:

May be an old phonograph needle housing. Or from an old phone.

Wow that does look similar. There's some kind of diaphragm in it (see end of toothpick).

Great identification flyadive! That explains the diaphragm. Thank you baspinall as well. I was way off base with the gas mask.

The button is tombac, not pewter (circa 1780-1820s).

The second item is a shot gun shell casing.
