Weird Artifacts

Anyone know what this is? My first reaction was it looked like an inlet or outlet from a gas mask?

It was dug up near these:

Union Metallic Cartridge (no. 12 Union 1901-1908)

Old Pewter Button (on left)

Old Mallet Head

Wow that does look similar. There's some kind of diaphragm in it (see end of toothpick).

It's from a rotary phone hand set.

The second item is a shot gun shell casing.
