Went out yesterday and quick hunt today with Charlie and Steve (fellow T-netters) to start off the 2016 season before the freeze.
Yesterday Charlie and I, being insane, must have hiked 5 hilly miles, that produced for me a 1883 V nickel.
Not satisfied with our digs-to-treasure ratio, Charlie proposed an alternative spot. I agreed to put few more steps in the woods even though we took a beating and we're tired. We arrived at the location and I was welcomed by a wall of vines, thorns and heavy brush, "Charlie, are you thinking about going in there??" I asked, "yep" he replied, " just gotta get past the first few feet, then it will be better", he reassured me! ...well that was not the case, it was a painful, hand scratching, jacket ripping crawl (we actually crawled on all fours at times) and at times I wondered "what the heck is wrong with us"?? Two grown men crawling through dense brush with detectors and shovels in hand?! The look on that family's face walking by secured my thoughts that we have issues! Nevertheless, there is a point to Charlie's madness, I did hit one semi-clean signal and pulled an 1827 Large Cent:
After that we called it a day, Charlie did score old coinage and told us that he quits, he will not hunt on Sunday (today) ... We laughed.
So today as I'm doing chores around the house I get a text from Charlie: "Bartek, you know I'm out hunting, right"? "I thought so", I replied. Then some time later a text from Steve, "Afternoon hunt guys?" ...sure, I guess vacuuming can wait another week!
So I dropped the mop and got going. I arrive at Steve's spot and ask if Charlie, who already been hunting all day in S.I. Is coming to Jersey. And as I finish the question, into the lot pulls in Charlie! Now that's a commited detectorist!
So we hear up, take a sip of Scotch, and spread out. This site had been well picked over the years so I'm not expecting much. I pick a small plot of land and go extra slow with the Deus... And few minutes in, I get a diggable tone and out comes this beauty:
Steve is a bit puzzled because he has covered that area before, and I'm stoked because at this point I forgot all about house chores!
After that I dug a lot of weak signals but only managed to grab clad.
This is a bit of a long post but I believe that the best part of a dig are the adventures and people that lead up to a nice find, and in this case this is 100% true. I have a big smile on my face at the start of the new year! Hope this year is full of stories and great finds for all of you!
Happy Hunting
