Hello all.
Last week a guy I work with told me about a school near his house that was built a few years ago and they tore down a couple old houses in the area. He doesn’t detect but I loaned him by AT Pro and we went there Saturday morning. Good signals were few and far between. I finally got a decent signal and the first coin of the day was an 1893 IHP. Only my 3rd Indian since I’ve been detecting.
A little while later I found another IHP (1899) but this time there were some friends in the hole (5 wheats). A 1919 and (4) 1927s. One of the wheats sounded sooo good, I just knew there was a Barber dime in the spill. But unfortunately, no silver.
Also found a junk ring and a whatisit. Any help would be appreciated on that item. (See pic at bottom for scale.)
My buddy didn’t find any coins but did find a piece of iron that I assume to be an old stirrup. Here is a pic along with a broken piece of a spur I found today. He really struggled since he had never detected. He actually lasted longer than I thought he would. Especially considering he was finding much.
Today I went back over there and the first coin I found was a 1908 V nickel. Compared to the other V’s I have found, it’s in pretty decent shape.
A little while later I got a banging signal and thought I had found my first fatty Indian, but it turned out to be 2 wheats stuck together. I finally got them to pop apart and they were bright green where they were together. I put the pinpointer back in the hole and got another signal that was a wheat. In the end there were 7 total wheats and a Buffalo nickel in the spill. I think the Buff might have had a date, but when I tried to scrap away the dirt I scrapped away any detail in that area. Bummer. I haven't cleaned any of the wheats so I don't know the dates yet.
So I have the V and the Buff. I’m not leaving without a Jefferson. Considering how scarce the coin signals had been I knew it would be tough, and it was. I was there another 2 hours before finding the ‘41 Jefferson along with a couple more wheats.
I would have loved to found silver at this site, but overall I was happy with the finds. And the 2 coins spills were fun! Due to the overall lack of high tones I would assume this place has been picked over by other detectorists.
Thanks for looking.
