Sorry to have missed the hunt this past weekend but I was out of town. Did get a chance to do some detecting back in northwestern Illinois. Researched a new location of a former rural one room school house that was torn down in the 1950s and got permission to hunt it. It is now just a grass field that is part of a farm. Found a great 1874 Indian Head that was about 8 inches deep. I have only cleaned with water and a soft brush at this point. Still has a little bit of dirt on it but it is the nicest condition IH I have ever found.

Then I looked for a bit in my dad's neighbor's yard and found 1941, 1946 and 1950 wheaties. Finished up the weekend by going to the other school site I had hunted the previous weeked where I found the 1891 IH. Focused on the side yard of the school this time which was not so trashy and was futher away from some powerlines. Scored several coins inlcluding a 1907 IH, a nice 1941 Merc, 1910, 1918 and 1920 wheaties. Also found a a massive man's gold wedding band. All the pennies and the ring were 8 to 9 inches deep. The dime was about 5 inches down. Pictures below

Awesome hunting!!!! Great finds, love the gold!!!!! :icon_pirat:

Wow you did great this weekend Pocket Spill! Love the IH... it sure is purty. That Freddie ain't half bad either! "Kaboom" on the gold! That's a whopper!! What Karat is it? Looks at least about 7+ grams.

Researching old sites really does pay off. In the trashy areas, what size coil are you using? I found reducing my coil from 11" to 6" is working out great! HH!

Thanks Rootmaster - There is some writing on the inside of the ring but it is very worn and I can't read it. I can make out a "K" but can't make out the numbers. I still use a larger coil as I don't have a small one.

Pocket Spill,

I'm late to respond to this post, I was away for the weekend. Congratulations on those finds! Indian Heads are great, that older one is in great shape! The only IH's I'm finding lately are in my Whitman folders...lol.

It appears you're getting exceptional depth with your Fisher. How well do the targets lock on when they are that deep? I'd have to imagine my M6 probably wouldn't give me really strong readings on an IH at 9 inches. A quarter, definitely. I got lucky with a 9'' deep Buff before...but I have to wonder what I may have skipped in the past! Nice job!

p.s. Great job researching!

Joe,
Both sites I found the IHs at were not optimal for detecitng . Both had powerlines that ran across the hunting area, soil was highly mineralized and both were littered with alot of iron. I was digging anything above iron on the ID scale that gave a steady repeatable signal. The 1874 Indian was a little iffy but I was getting a repeatable signal but it was in the 30 to 35 range on the ID. IHs typically register at about 60 so on the Fisher detectors. I don't know if it was on edge, being masked by something else, was just the depth or a combination of all of these. The 1907 registered at about a 50 and was jumping around a bit. Neither of these targets were a solid lock like a wheatie at say 5 inches were you can almost 90% tell it is a coin. I was digging all targets above iron as I was also trying to find any relic items for the historical society. Additionally these were not sites that are littered with pull tabs, foil or bottlecaps so digging all targets above iron was not going to translate into a 100 pulltab day.

Gotcha...good info. It would seem the VDI on the White's detectors are similar to those on the Fishers. I would really like to shake things up a bit and dig an IH...been digging a lot of wheats and war nickels, there aren't too many areas near me where Indian Head cents were used long enough for a substantial number to have been lost, other than "Goio Park", which of course is "enter at your own risk".

Thanks for the info, amigo.

Joe
