I was able to get out sat and sun a true rarity with me right now with my 1 year old. Sat started at a park that had been around since before 1918. I found a wheatie right off the bat and then nothing but clad. My research was good but I think the place had probably been redone because no one was finding anything old. I was voting to leave when the Silver Bandit found a Rosie... we stayed a bit longer but soon decided to bounce over to an old faithful. Before going over I told my other buddy Jimmy that I would be most dishonored if I didn't find a barber coin at the next spot. We get over there and start swinging and less than 10 minutes in he found one of the most pristine barber dimes I've seen out of the ground. So it's going to be one of those days... hhhmph. I swung around a bit getting trash signals and was beginning to get frustrated when I came upon a decent enough penny / silver signal. The ground was baked pretty hard from the dry weather we've been having. I fished around in the hole and pulled out my first barber dime of the year. I slashed it pretty good too with my lesche. Somehow I manage to dig hundreds of coins without damaging them yet the one that matters to get's the nick! I'm still pretty happy with it. I love those coins! A few minutes later I found a 53 rosie in the same area. Not a bad day. A couple minutes later Jimmy declared that he had a copper. Wow that doesn't happen too often in a city park! It was a draped bust! What a find! My window closed and I had to go home. I was quite happy being outside digging with friends and finding a little treasure!

Sunday the Bandit and I explored an old beach. It was a rocky shell covered beauty of a spot. Somehow I was able to eyeball the bowl of a clay smoking pipe as soon as I got near the water. I've always loved finding these things. It turns out to be a "TD" which is a pretty common style for the area. It's been tumbled quite a bit by the ocean. I've read that you can date the clay pipes by measuring the diameter of the hole that the smoke passed through. This one has the biggest borehole of any that I have found so I think that makes it older. I'm saying that this one is at least mid 1800's. A few minutes later I found a wafer thin copper (rang up like a penny) disk. After looking at the profile I was sure it was a U.S. Large cent that had been whittled down by the ocean. I was stoked for quite awhile. I had to keep checking it: I haven't found any coppers in 2020... was this even real? After awhile I came to the realization that it was just the inner core of a clad quarter. That beach never really produced much else so we left to do a schoolyard. I was pretty surprised to find an 83 Kennedy half. My first one ever. Not silver but at least someday it will age into being an antique! Well that was my detecting weekend. My favorite find has to be the Barber dime! There's nothing like driving home on a perfect day with something you found that excites you. Makes me think: treasure makes the bad days good, and the good days even better! Thanks for reading!

Nice post. Nicking only the coins that matter - maybe that should be added to Murphy's Laws. Still a great coin and an exciting find. Like the pipe bowl too. Congrats on a couple fun hunts.

Tommy just tell me where the gold is I'm on my way! My son is not cheap. Thinking back the coins I've hit it's almost always due to the hard ground and lack of patience coupled with not knowing exactly what I'm digging. The chills, spills and thrills of metal detecting.

Thanks Steve! It's definitely one of Murphy's laws! The better the coin the more likely you are to nick it.

Well done on the silver, and I think we've all been there on the gouge, nick, scratch of a find. (still hurts after 5 decades of doing it).
The copper whats on the other side?
I think it's a penny, but what type.

It's wiped. You can see a tiny bit of silver metal on each side and it's bigger than a penny in diameter so it can't be a penny. I'm 100% certain its the Washington quarter bust.

Pretty cool to pull out those! I'm stuck at work and sure enjoyed reading your post! Glad you found the dime, with a little extra character that you added! A 53 is older than any coin I have found, I would be extremely content. It's funny the things we value... but hunting for it and finding it immensely increases the personal value. There is definitely treasure in the hunt itself. I will be looking till I can't look anymore!!!

Exactly! It's not so much the value it's the built up known and unknown history of the object and yes the quest for it is another intangible thing that makes it so great. The finding of it attaches that to it making it far more valuable than what it might be worth as a thing to sell.

Awesome hunt
