Web site translations

There is an article in the December issue of WIRED magazine "Me Translate Pretty One Day"
It will be available online DEC 1st @ wired.com.

If you are nerdy enough.. :) its a good read on machine translation, its shortcomings and new ideas.

"Perhaps no technological endeavor has been more defined by its failures then the attempts over the last 60 years to use computers to convert one language into another. Its one of the earliest computer science problems to be attacked, and it has proven to be the one that's most difficult."

Right you are, Mechtech. Such sites have their uses, but they seldom provide fully reliable translations.

For example, try translating a sentence from English to French, and then back again:

Original: "We saw a man on horseback crossing the creek that ran through the canyon."

French translation: Nous avons vu un homme croiser à cheval la crique qui a fonctionné par la gorge.

English translation from French: "We saw a man crossing with horse the split which functioned by the throat."

Uh... yeah, right.
