Neighborly disputes can be messy, but also highly entertaining. We've all heard stories from friends and family about unruly neighbors. Their pets destroyed their garden; their kids broke a window; or the noise from the unauthorized house party was cause to phone the police.

Yet, what do you do when a neighbor fires an unloaded cannon at you?

Civil War Cannon
Civil War Cannon

Yes, it's straight from Mary Poppins, but a New York man has been charged with harassment for firing an unloaded Civil War cannon at his neighbors. The police have also confiscated his "weapon:"
"Authorities say a western New York man has been charged with harassment for repeatedly firing an unloaded Civil War cannon at the homes of his neighbors."

"The Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office says 52-year-old Brian Malta fired the cannon at neighboring homes in the rural town of Kiantone, on the Pennsylvania border 60 miles south of Buffalo."

"Deputies say the cannon was fired with only a powder charge and wadding. Police confiscated the cannon."

"Officials say Malta had an ongoing dispute with his neighbors, but no details were released."

"Malta was arrested Wednesday and charged with three counts of harassment and three counts of menacing. He was released from the county jail after posting $2,500 bail."

Been wondering what to do about my neighbor up the road!
PERFECT!

i wonder if he waited until they came out of their front door to fire it off at them.......I'm sure that if he did, his neighbors also should be reimbursed for some new underwear!:laughing7:

L.C.

I wonder if he had a concealed carry permit for it?

We used to make a "cannon" from beer cans when I was a kid ... loud enough to rattle the neighbors windows on the next block. Modern beer cans are too flimsy but 6 soup cans, an old fashioned beer can opener and a 10 penny nail make up the main components ... and of course "duct tape" to hold them all together.

The "catalyst" was a couple drops of lighter fluid ignited by a match. We could shoot a loosely molded "cannon ball" made of aluminum foil about 100 yards.

I'm sure if we did it today, it would attract the police from miles around.

Anyone else ever use one of those home made hand held cannons?

Beer can mortors:laughing7:A tennis ball had about a 1000 yard range. You need the good old fashion heavy beer cans.

don't see why the coppers took his cannon...though a 12 pounder can rattle windows at two hundred yards

the cops here just want a heads up before i shoot off the small cannon i have...guess i scare chickens, dogs and some locals..

maybe he was just trying to rid the neighborhood of pigeons

Red, use some camo to hide your howitzers

Trust me jeff,a 12 pounder firing a triple load of canister doesnt need camo:laughing9:
Howitzers are a different field piece.

I know Red, figured you for the more accurate piece

cannister huh?

the killdeer did not like it at all. cool video Red. It's one thing to read the history, another to see it. I would hate to be facing one (or dozens ) of those

Yeah it was pretty cool at that, just found it.It gives you a different prospective of the guys that use to charge the guns, never mind ordered to march in echelon towards them.

no kidding, those were real men.
