I'm sure you've all seen them, probably (initially) thought they may be proofs, or at least NIFCs. These mid 90s halves that are remarkably BU. What I'm finding are the 94D and 96D. Dozens upon dozens of them.

My theory is that they were originally held by the US Mint, as current supply in circulation was thought to be adequate. But with all the CRHers out there now, pulling halves from circulation, these older (previously unreleased) halves are now (finally) being "set free".

Your thoughts ?

Re: We must be forcing the Mint............

I suppose that is a possibility. Makes about as much sense as any other reason for three being a lot of shiny rims on older coins.

I get the 96's 99's and 01's in MASS quantity, and some others, some QUITE old in much lower quantities.

Most of the new ones don't trick me though into looking at their dates to see if they are NIFC or anything because I find the 99's and 01's are noticeably skinnier than any other years.

Re: We must be forcing the Mint............

If you're getting rolls in fed wrapping that are entirely of one year and mintmark, then I would say that's the case.

But if they're mixed in amongst other coins heavily worn coins, I would guess it's more likely that people have been dumping their stash of almost uncirculated clads. I've never looked in to it, but i cant imagine dealers are paying much over face value if anything for relatively recent rolls of AU clad and ebay's a hassle... unless you guys know otherwise?

Re: We must be forcing the Mint............

dont know about this....but i most commonly find 1971's

Re: We must be forcing the Mint............

I see a lot of relatively uncirculated everything, so I cannot presume I am getting the fabled dust-covered stocks.

Re: We must be forcing the Mint............

I've been getting whole boxes of mint looking 96 and 98P's here.

Re: We must be forcing the Mint............

I've been getting a lot of new looking 65 through 69.

Re: We must be forcing the Mint............

The mint has no more halves to distribute. More likely these have been sitting in the Fed's vaults for years and only now are being tapped.

Alternatively, they may have been sitting in casino vaults for years and now as a casino switches over to coinless slots, may be emptying out their vaults.

Once again, the mint is not sitting on these. They have regular GSA audits and if they had any halves, the GSA audit would basically prompt them to unload them, either for melt, ship to Federal Reserve, or sell them on the website.

Re: We must be forcing the Mint............

I have been geting these shiny, aggravating mid 90's halves in great numbers since I started CRHing. Since no halves really "circulate" (except through CRHing), the coins are still in great shape because they have just been sitting somewhere (a vault, someone's closet, etc.).

I agree that they are being pulled in bulk from the Federal Reserve as the demand requires. I really dislike when a large portion of the box is filled with these 199x coins. Oh well. I doubt they were held by a collector and then dumped in such large and consistent quantities. Oh well, i believe we'll see this more and more often until those coins get beat down over the next 20 years of the cycles of CRHing.

These are BU halves, not reeded edge, worn smooth, casino coins.

Good guess though. 8)
