I thought I had my choice of MDs narrowed down to the Gold Bug 2 or the Whites GMT. But the fact that the Garrett AT Gold is waterproof down to 10 feet seems like it could be a huge advantage in being able to detect right down the center of a stream or river. I'd be working in a river that has a ton of black sand and iron heavies, so the AT Gold would need to be good in iron discrimination, at least as good at the GB2 and GMT. Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

I was faced with the same decision last year and went with the land unit. I think that under water MD is an entirely different ball game. I vote for the best tool for a specific job. No do it all, jack of all trades master of none. That said I am now looking around at under water units. Coil selection? Warranty? Can you stand constant noise of a thresh hold? Gold bug pro has a great big display and a silent mode. GMT has that auto track gb and really knocks out hot rocks. They are probably all capable prospectors. Good luck it's a hard decision to make and research is part of the fun.

That is what I like about my at gold. It will discriminate iron also the iron audio will help distinguish between iron and other metals.
