My friend found this button this afternoon on his property. His house was built in 1903 on a piece of land where an older house once stood. The surrounding homes in his neighborhood were built from the early to late 1800s. The button is 11/16 of an inch in diameter and was found at a depth of 5 inches using an old Whites 6000/Di. His discrimination was set at 5 on the 0-10 discrimination knob. (Gold, tabs & nickels range). Last year using the same machine, he found what we thought was a sword on the same property but turned out to be an 1866 French bayonet after some research.
All he did was soak the button in some white vinegar for 1/2 hour & wiped it clean with a cloth. (no brushing !)
Any info on this button would be appreciated. Is it a cuff, pocket or coat button ? Is it gold gilt ? Any ideas on a date range ?
The button appears to be a Marine Corps. button and there is no date or numbers on the back of it. It just says
"Waterbury Button Co.", which I know goes back to at least the middle 1800s.
