I posted this as part as "today's finds" yesterday. I went detecting in my uncles yard which is shared with my grams yard too. My family has lived in both houses since they were built. I found this about 5 inches down. It is missing a piece on the front. It is either copper or brass. There is what I think an eagle at the top holding two arrows. There is a bow at the bottom of the piece with a wreath going up it. I emailed a few people who may know it's history. The only hit I got on my post yesterday is that is a watchfob and it may be from the grand army of the republic of veterans (which is no longer in existence). A few of my uncles and my grandfather served. My great great uncle supposedly fought in the civil war. I would love to find out what it is since it is part of my family history. I hope I can pin it down to who it belonged to and when and why they got it. Thanks in advance.

A start would be to research G.A.R. encampments in local area, nearest ones anyway. Then find what badges were for what year. A subject I have found interesting in my area. Here is an idea for you to start with in the form of a picture. It suggests Joe Hooker Post 23 Boston for your piece.
Those who attended encampments were eligible to acquire the badges I think, a souvenir of sorts. The G.A.R. was welcomed to set up a camp for annual event at most anyplace they chose,(a highly organized tent camp and meeting) and towns often competed for their presence. Even the general public offered their hospitality to them and their caring cause. Their cause worth researching.

That piece is close, but not identical. Thank you I will look into the encampments. That is an awesome collection if it is yours. I will let you know what I find out through my research.

Not mine. My finds from hunted encampments = one seated dime.
In your favor is the G.A.R. kept records of their meetings. Some with attendants names. Some photo,s too. Where are those records today?

I'm from Pittsburgh and I just found out there is a GAR room in the Carnegie Music Hall called post 153 with a bunch of historical items there. I just left a message for the curator. I will send the pictures to her and see if she can help me out. I will let you know what I find out.

Cool find T hunter , is there something missing from the center of yours? It looks like it was an attachment point!
