Watch Eric Holder Refuse to Answer Whether Congress? Phones Were Monitored | Video | TheBlaze.com

Attorney General Eric Holder on Thursday refused to answer whether the federal government has monitored phones belonging to members of Congress.

Holder was asked to provide assurances that no phones inside the Capitol or belonging to lawmakers were monitored, one day after the bombshell revelation that the government secretly collected the phone records of millions of Verizon customers inside the U.S.

“With all due respect, senator, I don’t think this is an appropriate setting for me to discuss that issue,” Holder said in response to a question from Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) during a previously scheduled Senate hearing to discuss the Justice Department’s budget. “I’d be more than glad to come back in an appropriate setting to discuss the issues you have raised.”

Kirk interjected that “the correct answer would be no, we stayed within our lane, and I assure you we did not spy on members of Congress.”

Holder did say that members of Congress were kept fully informed about the program to collect the phone records.

“Members of Congress have been fully briefed as these issues, these matters have been underway,” Holder said, adding that he wasn’t comfortable saying more in an unclassified setting.

That’s in line with comments earlier Thursday from Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) that they were aware of what was happening.

“This is nothing new. This has been going on for seven years…every member of the United States Senate has been advised of this,” Chambliss said.

Graham said Americans’ phone records were swept up only to track people “suspected to be terrorists.”

dude...everyones phones have been tapped since the nixon administration.

but keep making it a republican/democrate thing...keeps the weirdos off the governments....
the government exists, and performs, without the use of elected political officials...
blame yourself {ourselves}for not being a good citizen the last 50 years.

Just once I would love someone from the current administration to acknowledge wrong doing verses always saying the previous administration did it also. Such a shame...

i believe it is time to quit blaming the administrations...an deal with the problem...bloated governement...

i love it when some person...spent their life working in law enforcement, fire, any government organization..garbage collector, dfog catcher...ect...
spouts off about the disables who DRAIN our resources..
...when they are the biggest drain on resources....they get better pay then the civilian sector..better retairment, better health care...all paid for by US...and then go on about the undeserving...well who made it up that a clerk in some governemt office deserves more than anyone else?
they screw up the local economy...their higher pay scale allows them to buy into property and good...raise the prices on everything...

this is not a democrate or republican issue folks...an until we get our heads out of the buzz word bingo games...it will continue.

He isn't going to answer till he goes back to his boss and asks what the answer is he wants him to give, then he will come back and answer.

Just like when CIA director nominee John Brennan was testifying before congress and was asked about drones used to execute american citizens on US soil, he refused to answer, he would have to check and get back.

Exactly. Why? IMHO - they would be left out to dry if they don't respond with something that protects the Administration.
