I found this while detecting a field in NC today, when I tried to lookup what it was the only imagine I could find that almost completely matched mine was from a Maryland.gov article that claimed it was a 1795-1812 British Navy button. I'm not 100% convinced that is what it is considering the clamps on the back. Looking for any insight thanks in advanced.

Cool find but it's not a button due to the clasps on the back.

Based on the clasps I'm thinking it was attached to fabric, leather or something like that.

Maybe attached to a hat or cap?

Carefully clean it and post some more clear pictures of the front and back. That might help with the ID.

I think it clips on a piece of leather some how maybe a decorative piece of horse tack or a belt

Thanks for the suggestions. I was told by somebody who seemed pretty confident that It could be part of a button bracelet that would have many of them attached with cloth or leather to form a bracelet.
