Was pig iron boxes used to ship gold bars by rail

OK, We have located some metal boxes 6" deep inside, that we think was used to ship gold bars from SanFrancisco by rail to Philadelphia in 1863. Can anyone tell me did they use pig or cast iron containers when they shipped gold by rail. If so does anyone have pictures to post. Thank You
