I was going up to metal detect at a friend's 1800's farm house when we stumbled upon an old dumpsite deep in the woods. I posted some things we found which was a lot of fun, but then I came across this "thing" I can't ID.
Is aproximately 41' long and it's small pieces of leather riveted together to form some sort of belt? There isn't anything like it on line. Has anyone ever seen anything like it? Thanks for looking.

Cool find :headbang: Yeah, I second what the poster above said

BTW, they don't make women detectorists like you here in NJ. Mostly haggard looking gals named Bertha :laughing7: If you're ever up for a hunt, shoot me a PM. I'll walk to Rhode Island if I have to :laughing9: :love4:

I'm sure as I brave the elements more and more I'll be weathered enough to change my name to Bertha!

Interesting finds. I especially like the "Leary's Root Beer" bottle. Most likely from the 1950s, and from Newburyport, MA. Too bad it isn't in better shape. In mint condition they are typically worth about $25.00 or so. If you look on the underside base there should be some numbers. A double digit code like 21 <(I)> 59 means it was made in 1959.

Thanks for sharing.

That's too bad Bob, $25.00 is nothing to scoff at! If you like it you can have it.
I like the STP can myself and that shoe sole is about a size 13 if you can believe it!

Thank you so much. I will take you up on your generous offer regarding the "Leary's" bottle. But only if you send it C.O.D. I believe they still do that these days. I think they just hold it at the Post Office and send me a notice to pick it up. Let me know if this is okay with you and I will send you my address offline via a PM e-mail.

Additionally, I wanted to show you this Pennzoil can I found a while back. I mainly collect soda bottles that I hunt for along old highways. It's amazing how many of them were tossed from cars over the years. And ocassionally I will find a still intact can of some sort. But this is rare because most of them rust away. But in the case of the Pennzoil can, I found it under a layer of several inches of pine needles. I have found other cans this way also, and think the pine sap or something has a preserving effect on metal. (I'm not certain but believe the oil can is from the 1950s or 60s).

I will look forward to hearing from you. In the meantime, good hunting and "Happy Trails."

Bob

P.S. ~

When we exchange PMs please be sure to send me an address. I have something in mind that I would like to send you as well. But I would rather not disclose what it is just yet. Surprises can sometimes be more fun. And if you like, when you receive it you can share it on this thread for others to see.

Thanks again,

Bob

I used to put STP in my first car I owned and it came in cans like that for about that price so I would guess its 70's.

I like the Chlorox most but it is a screw cap so it looks as if all the containers are 20th century..

The clover container looks like a grinding compound to lap/seat/grind engine valves.

Thank you so much- I'll contact you!

The clover tin still has the valve grinding stuff in it- I showed it to my husband and he said it was valve grinding compound. I asked, "what's that?" He looked at me and sighed and said, "see, you make me do this then I get in trouble- it grinds valves." He was right- he was in trouble.

As far as I remember you would apply the compound on the valve seat, insert it back into the engine, attach a tool with a suction cup and spin it by hand until the valve seats... but Im sure thats more than you need to know lol.

BTW welcome to TN.

Found it listed on your profile I.P. Right under the "Hobbies" section where it stated; "I enjoy metal detecting in brightly colored spandex outfits that leave little to the imagination. Regardless of don't ask, don't tell, I will continue the good fight for all of my fellow spandex loving detectorists worldwide." :laughing7: ;D :laughing9: :tongue3:

Oh, so you do search. Unfortunately I'm not like that and live quite a bit more North than RI. (just in case you had your walking shoes ready) :laughing7:
