OK i hope i have it right now. First wrong pic and have tried a few times since with no success. This is my first time posting. Trying a different computer this time. What i have is a 1837 Canadian 1 cent bank token that has been altered to have 2 crossed muzzle loader rifles with cat tails and some weeds in the back ground. The writting on it is backwards and says "Rideau Gun Club Ottawa" this is not something i recently found but found it around 10 years ago. I have also included a barber dime for size. Hope you can help.

It looks as if it may have been used to create a seal matrix, so that when impressed into hot sealing wax, the reversed lettering would appear like this:

Thanks PKB. I thought of that but all of the wax seals i have seen are not as fine. Could it be for ink. You could very well be right. The details are very fine and i'm not sure if it would make a good impression in wax . I could wrong. Wouldn't be the first time.

Printing is a possibility as well, but the result would be white lettering on a black field, and probably a bit irregular at the border— especially with a nick at the top. Also, although it may just be the photo, it doesn't look as if it would lie perfectly flat, which would affect its use as a printing cut.

Anyway, I'd say it was obviously intended to be used as some sort of imprinting die, cut, matrix or whatever.

As for the wax seal theory, that should be easy enough to test. ;)

Thanks again PKB. I agree its definitely for printing an image. I did try it using wax and ink as well. Didn't get any results either way, But I'm far from being a expert. The image side is smooth and flat.

Just curious has anyone ever seen anything that is similar and made out of a coin i am sure it wouldn't have the same imprint on it. If so let me know and even better a picture. A water mark, First i have heard of that one. But possible. And i agree thought it was cool since the day i found it. Thanks again
