I learned very valuable lesson learn today! Some of
you may already know this but I didn't. I was detecting today and came
across a section of the beach that the day before was being
replenished. I could clearly see that 200 ft up on the beach a tractor
had been used. I was in the wet sand and stepped i...n a hole they had dug
the day before at the waters edge. My first foot sank 12 inches and the
second when 30 inches. In 5 seconds I had both legs side by side 30
inches deep.I first sat down to stop sinking but it wasn't going to
work. I drop the detector and spun around 360 and with the scoop dug it
in and pull myself out on my stomach it took a bit to do this.No waves had
come in the 30 seconds I was in that hole.
I was truly shook up. My arm was still in the cuff and the detector
follow me out. 10 minutes later a girl jogger found the same fate up
the beach just not as deep. She wasn't near the water but the sand was wet.
I was close to her and had to help her out of the sand she was very upset.
I later saw a tract hoe was up on the north end of the beach. They must have
dug deep holes to get the sand. I don't think they are supposed to dig below the high water mark.
But they did and I am not sure how deep that hole was as I never felt solid sand.
Be warned!

Wait, are you saying that they dug the sand from between the high and low tide lines and moved that sand to another part of the beach? IF so, you need to search the area they relocated the sand to as there are bound to be some deep targets that were brought up and spread out. Talk about "renourishment". Be safe.

Ya they did and they aren't supposed to do that! And after that sand gets packed a little I may hit it a bit. But fresh soft sand isn't the best place to detect. Signals get funkie if you can here them at all with an Excal. Targets need to have packed sand around them on the beach. A land detector would be the best shot at it. steve
