During the california gold rush of 1849, aresident, whose name is now lost to history, joined the thousands of people headed west to find their fortune. After a few years he returned to Morgan County with a fortune in nuggets. He had made a rich strike. After a short stay, he decided to return to California to resume his mining activities. Fear of being robbed on the trail forced him to bury his nuggets on the bluffs of Big Clear Creek. He became ill after arriving in California and wrote a letter telling his favorite nephew of the buried gold. His nephew looked for it but never found it. Soon afterwards he passed away in California. It has not been reported found as to this day.

Big Clear Creek would be in what state? Also, what state would you find this particular Morgan County?

Thanks,

Ecominer

Sorry. I forgot to say what state. This is in Warburg, Tennessee.

You mean Wartburg. There is no city called Warburg.

Wonder why the lucky guy carried all those nuggets back to Wartburg
and then took them back toward California. Does that sound logical to
you? When you choose to believe a yarn like that it makes it hard to
offer advice. lastleg

I'm not sayin whether this, or any other story(yarn) on here is factual or not. The fact is, most stories start out as fact then are blown out of proportion as they are passed down through the years. But most certainly have some factual beginnings. Also I have noticed that people with large, or even smaller amounts of money most of the time get paranoid to the point that they do strange things. The only way to know for sure is to do research-research-research. Then if somewhat satisfied, go for it.

Wartburg, TN was incorporated in 1905. I have not located the 'bluffs'
but imagine that covers a lot of territory. The area is famous for white-
water rafting. lastleg

;D I live in Wartburg, Tennessee. The area you are looking for is somewhere in the Northwest portion of the county. A lot of the land has been taken over by the U>S> Park Service. Re: Big South Fork National Forest. The area is very rugged with high cliffs along the Big Clear Creek and Little Clear Creek. Great place for hunting indian artifacts, as this was a major trail line for the indians before the white man settled the area. If you have a topo map, or atlas, you can locate the area(s) by finding Lancing Tennessee on the map and then working north and east from there.

I have been researching the area for years, and have found several interesting places for MD'ing.ope this info helps you'all
