Been reading on this site for a bit now and must say i love it.Anyways,i recently bought a house in eastern CT which was built in 1825 and has what i have been told is a old one room school house added to the back as an addition(now my sons bedroom).Anyways,i tore out the walls, past the old plaster, then past the old wood planking and found this lying under years of dirt and dust and some other things i prefer not to mention.
The front says"State of Rhode Island"along top and "hope" along bottom.Back says "The state of Rhode Island to her sons who on land and sea defended the nations honour in the War With Spain 1898.

This is a Campaign 'Medal of Honor' issued by the State of Rhode Island. Probally cica 1902. Quoted from http://www.spanamwar.com/1stRhodeIsland.htm

"The First Rhode Island was mustered into service between may 10 and May 17, 1898 at Quonsett Point, Rhode Island. At the time time of muster in, the unit consisted of forty-six officers and 958 enlisted men.? This regiment, the only infantry regiment raised on Rhode Island during the war.

The regiment was mustered out of service on march 30, 1899 at Columbia, South Carolina. At the time of muster-out, the regiment included forty-five officers and 1, 039 enlisted men. During its term of service, the unit lost eleven enlisted men who died from disease and one enlisted man who died as the result of an accident. Thrity-five more enlisted men were discharged for disability. Interestingly the, the unit also had thirteen enlisted men court-martialed and eighty-nine men desert the regiment."

See http://www.spanamwar.com/medals.htm

I have several campaign medals, basically they were issued to everyone who entered the campaign, or presented to the next of kin. I would suggest that you contact the webmaster of the listed site for more info.

Can you dig it?
