Found a button and I looke it up and some say WWl and WWll? Also a chart dates it back to 1850-1865. I'm confused. The dates don't match the world wars. Any ideas from the pros? Plus this is my first war button if it is one. BigCypressHunter is the man to answer your question about the backmark. I can tell you that your button dates after 1910 and is still in use. Was there a black coating on it as seen in picture number 2 or was that just dirt? If it was black it would have dated from 1910-1923 and may have seen use in WWI. If it was just dirt then it isn't a WWI era button. It could date from 1910-1917 and after 1923. There has been a discussion on here about the backmark and BCH has an excellent thread on the Great Seal buttons. Here's a link; http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/what/112828-great-seal-button-backmarks-help.html

I agree with fyrffytr1. I believe we are seeing "Black Finish" camouflage on your US Army general-service "Great Seal" button, which dates it to being from World War One to 1923. Most probably, it is wartime-made because there were so many leftovers from the "downsizing" of the US army after the war that few if any new ones needed to be made. Whoever put that chart of Scovill dates onto the internet should correct it or take it down. "Scovill Mfg. Co. Waterbury" appears on Scovill button backmarks for 112 years, (1850 to 1962), when Scovill stopped making buttons. The backmark's punctuation, with stars or dots or "florals" or without, lettering size, and lettering "font" (serified or plain-block letters), tell the time-period. If you want to see nearly all of the known variations of Scovill backmarks, the best book on button backmark dating, "American Military Button Makers And Dealers; Their Backmarks & Dates, has dozens of photos showing the Scovill backmark variations from specific time-periods.

Yes it does have a painted black like finish on it. I didn't find many old relics or coins around where i found it. There were signs of it maybe being a home site, the home could have dated early 1900's. No old coins or anything else just a top layer of clad and some junk. I was determined to find at least a wheat penny to have a possible reference of some sort. I dunno? Thanks for the info!

Thanks Truth! John 14:5 Thomas *said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, how do we know the way?” 6 Jesus *said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
