Wanted: First Metal Detector for my son?

i am looking for a detector for my son. he is 17 and ready to start hunting but i'm not sure if he will stay with it? what can i get him for a couple hundred dollars that is a good, all around detector? we live on the texas coast, so soil is clay and sand in most areas. i was hoping that someone might have one that can be used in water as well, or are they a lot more money?

Try www.craigslist .com and go to Corpus Christi and look under items wanted/sale and punch in metal detector,there should be some on there.
