That might be an expensive item but I do hope you can find one used and get a great deal on it.

Well GPR does work and the results are repeatable. I have used GSSI equipment personally, and witnessed Mala and Sensors and Software being used. Never heard of the system you mentioned, so can't comment on that.

The statement that they can go 75 feet and only a few inches can both be true. It all depends on what frequency antenna you are using. And there is always a trade off. A very low frequency antenna (50 to 200 MHz) can see very deep, but the smallest size object or cavity that can be seen is quite large (3-5 ft in size). A very high frequency antenna (900 to 2000 MHz) can see only very shallowly into the ground, but the smallest object that can be seen is only a few inches wide.

Archaeologists usually use a 400 or 500 MHz antenna. They usually are looking between 6-9 feet deep at most. You can see some results of these survey at this website:

Yes, there are. And you don't have to go to college. For example, the Seminole tribe of Florida is holding a workshop April 16-18th that combines unit operation with software intrepretation. It is stated to be an advanced workshop, though, so might not be the best place to start.

I agree with the above recommendation about the GPR class. The one mentioned is taught by Dean Goodman who is the creator of the GPR-Slice and GPR-SIM programs. I use both and Dean is great for making modifications and changes based on what the users request. The software is licensed for $1500 per year and up depending on which packages you get. There are several decent books on GPR that I recommend, starting with the easiest.

Ground Penetrating Radar for Archaeology by Larry Conyers is a good beginner book.
Ground Penetrating Radar by David Daniels really gets into the theory.

I don't know of any real GPR systems that sell for less than $30K and usually much more depending on what frequencies you need. We recently bought two GSSI SIR-3000 systems for about $80K and a Sensors & Software PulseEKKO Pro system for about $90K.

The Mala systems have become "cheap" in that they are $15K-20K. That is what current users have told me was there purchase price. The website doesn't give quotes, you have to talk to them. The company was recently purchase by an oil exploration firm, though, so you never know what will happen.
