I haven't actually started metal detecting yet--still reading up on it and hoping that "Santa" will get me started next month. I will be retiring in May (Hubby is already retired), so we will soon have time for a new hobby. We are interested in history (esp. Civil War) and I understand the 7 acres we live on saw some traffic during the last couple of hundred years (Trail of Tears, Forrest's raid on Murfreesboro, stage coach road, and so on.) I won't be posting on a regular basis until the first of next year. Until then, I am doing my homework and learning what I can from you all. I may be asking questions, so bear with me. Meanwhile, hello!

Welcome to Tnet! That is great that you are going to do research first as well. I hope Santa is kind to you and I can't wait to see some of your finds! Happy Huntin :)

You might consider browsing Sub-Forums: Tennessee for information (i.e., clubs, hunts, finds, legends, maps, etc.) directly related to your state.

Hello back to you. Sounds like quite the site to learn on. Most would love to have access to a place like that! Ask anything....there are some very knowledgable people here and they are more than happy to share with anyone wanting to learn.

Welcome to the site ,neighbor. I'm in Dunlap,Tn.
Your gonna love the hobby. And lucky for you,on your property ...

address? I would like my first civ relic

Welcome to the forum and hope you and Santa find lots of goodies. There are some great people here to help you ID your relics.

Welcome aboard and hopefully Santa sets ya up good! :)

Greetings from Chattanooga and welcome to the hobby. You need a good basic rock solid detector to get started with. i highly recommend The Fisher F 2 and some additional coils. the smaller one and the larger one that are extra purchases. You can start out watching youtube videos on various detectors in use. There used to be a guy over there by the name of Larry Hickland. He owned Stones River Relics and Metal Detectors right there at the battlefield entrance. I would recommend starting out with a basic detector , no bells and whistles and learn the basics. The most important thing is " ground balance" . You will not have to worry about that issue with a entry level machine. Go see Larry if he has not retired. Contact me anytime.
