I would definitely detect along the road on the right. It may be an old railroad grade and you will know very quickly if you start finding RR spikes. At the same time you could find old tools tossed out along the edges. I have come across quite a few of these cuts out in the woods where they had dug to level the grade of the tracks.

What are the dimensions of the rim. Is it solid all the way around? That type rim usually had a solid rubber tire on it. Could be from an old auto but most likely from an old baggage float from a depot. Tony

Very early model automobile rim. This would have been the outer rim for the old wood spoked wheels. Most commonly had twelve spokes set into a wood "inner" rim then attached to the steel "outer" rim. Sizes typically ranged from 19" to 21". About how heavy is the rim and how many holes are in it. Cool find!

A couple of examples :

The wheel is 18-19 in. it has 13-14 spokes, around the rim on the edge are four square cutouts evenly spaced. I have found one railroad spike or maybe a logging spike, many small files, many different size horshoes, old UMC shotgun shells and a few old rusty spoons.

Tony,I am less than a 1/2 mile from an old depot, what is a baggage float?

A bagage float is a wagon used at the depot to haul stuff to the train. The four holes is where the metal rim fastened to the woden whell. Could still be from an old car. Tony
