if you've never hunted the beach before, check out www.thegoldenolde.com.
Probably one of the best beach hunting resources ever.

do a quick search on travelling with a detector. there are many threads about the topic, and appears to be a matter of choice whether to pack the detector, or carry it on the plane. (I always wrap mine and pack it in the luggage).

Check to see if your detector functions well in sandy, mineralized areas. Just post the type of detector here, or do a search on it... you'll get some good info. Some detectors work better than others in salty conditions.

and finally... hit the areas where the people are (cabannas, umbrellas, chairs, concession stands, and the water). People tend to lost items when leaving the beach. They spill things off towels, drop them out of bags, purses, etc, and generally are in a rush to leave and don't take as much care. They also tend to lose jewelery after putting on suntan lotions and such. And finally... when the water hits you, fingers shrink and rings fall off. Many mom's have lost rings while digging in the sand with their kids at the water's edge.

good luck

I was on Maui in February, and while I didn't take a detector with me, I got up early every morning and watched a local guy comb the beach every day. He would start about 6 am and he would be gone by the time the sun people emerged to crowd the beaches around 8 am. So on Kanapaali beach I am relatively sure it is ok, but you may have some competition.

Good luck and please let us know how you do.

Aloha, I live on the Big Island, but yes bring your machine. It is legal everywhere. As for competition, I wouldn't worry about that. You miss a target by a quarter inch it might as well be a mile. Good luck and let us know how you do. Steve

:)

Thanks for all the info guys... I have a Tesoro Cibola, not been used much so I better start practicing:)

Note to self... don't let son use detector, he might get too deep in the water, then try to dry it out by the fire and get the plastic too hot. (sigh)... :-\

Hey Steve, any suggestions as to what kind of scoop to get?

Re: Visiting son in Maui soon, anyone got any "do's and don'ts" info for me?

I have used a ton of different scoops. A good scoop is literally worth its weight in gold if you plan on doing a lot of beach hunting. If you're going to be working only the dry sand, a light duty scoop works well. If you're working the wet sand, and surf, get a heavy duty scoop... the bigger the better. When waves are crashing on and around you, getting an item on the first scoop is pretty important ;D

I have a sunspot scoop that I think is one of the best i've ever used. here are a few links to get you going.
