Recovered from a box of old buttons and other items three Virginia State Seal buttons. Each button has thirteen stars and the point of the spear touches one of the stars on each of the buttons. The back mark on one button is Scovill Mfg. Co Waterbury. The back mark on the other two buttons (with some cloth still attached) is Baker & McKenney NY. I have possably dated the Waterbury button to pre-CW and used in CW. Have not found similar buttons backed marked Baker & McKenney. Any help identifying back mark and value would be appreciated. Your Scovill button is 1870-90, so post-Civil War. Note the superscript "o" in "Co." and the large letters. This information can be found on p.36 of Tice.

I suspect that the one marked Baker & McKenney is post-war also.

Thanks Buckleboy. I did some more research last night and came to the same conclusion. All three buttons are from the 1870 to 1890 period. I consider them a good fine for my button collection. TomB
