Had a great day with Jim, (SouthJerseyJim) and his Mom at one of there favorite sites. Within the first fifteen minutes I dug three coins. I could see the shield nickle and knew I had a large cent but the odd sized coin I couldn't make out. Later I met up with Jim in the field and showed him the coins I had found that's when we noticed the crown and shield on the odd sized coin. We had no idea what it was. I received a text from Jim the next day informing me that I had dug my first Virginia Halfpenny. Still trying to get a date off of the large cent and the shield nickle. A 1893 Indian and a 1938 Buffalo at the end of the hunt. The ring shaped thing is what is left of a cloth button. I was excited to see this little padlock, very neat. Great day... Arty

very cool find, and it looks like it has some great detail remaining.

Re: Virginia Halfpenny 1774

I believe the virginia half penny was only made in 1773, I dug one in Ohio last year, and researched them quite a bit....super find!

Great little coin to add to your collection! I found one of those back in November. Very exciting to see that in the hole. Congrats!!! Nice detail too. :blob7:

Awesome Arty! That is in great shape. This field is amazing isn't it? I don't want it to end :'(

Hey that's not fair! I don't find any NJ coppers down here in VA. Just messin' with ya. Real nice find!

Thanks all for the kudos.

I don't find any here in New Jersey either! :BangHead:

Great find Arty! I don't recall seeing a VA copper dug in these parts in quite some time!

Thanks Neil, I was very surprised and happy that it Virginia was waiting for me...

A Va Halfpenny will show up every now and then, usually when least expected. I remember the last one I found, (Thanksgiving Day 2009) I thought it was an undersized counterfeit KGIII Halfpenny till I got it home and got the crud off of it. Glad to see another one being found in SJ. I have 3, think my son has one, perhaps two.
