Trying to ID what this is. I cannot find any markings on it aside from the ornate painted flowers and vines. It appears to be cast iron and very heavy. It was left in a workshop on our property when we moved in. A local friend suggested a lap harp but I can't find any images like it on the web.

Welcome to Tnet.

Turn it the other way up and it looks like the side piece of an old theatre or cinema seat to me.

I don't think anyone would bother with ornate painted flowers and vines on a piano reinforcement plate that would never actually be seen. Good luck sitting something as heavy as that on your lap as part of any musical instrument!

I'm still going to go with some type of stringed musical instrument.
Maybe the neck to an upright harp?

If you look closely, you can see where the strings have been wound around the tuning posts.
They appears a faint lines (indentions / impression) in the material going off to the right in the photo, adjacent to each pin.
But for a harp, this whole thing is upside down (even though the basic shape - governed by the string pitch - seems to be about "right").?

Like this: sort of...

My first thought was a piano harp as well.
That's why this is 'open', to allow the sound to resonate.

What you have now is an ID to the items.
Now the repurpose would be a lovely bench seat and these as the ends.
They have a value if you put the turn light bulb on in thinking caps when they read the AD "For Sale"
