It is treasure hunting gold mine. the map below from 1875 shows locations of houses many of these was burned to the ground in the thumb fire of 1881. many of these rural farm house may of had caches of gold coins lost in the fire. at least 2000 people died and thousands more displaced . The question is begging how many people lost everything including their savings at home.
Here is an example white rock at least 2 hotels burned down and post office. All could have had gold coins stored in those buildings before the fire.

Here is another site near flag pole where another hotel existed.
Here is a location of where the post office once stood.
While of course some of these site may not be accessible due to being private property. it still proves a point in question. this location is one of many that burned to the ground not counting numerous farm houses. There must be many abandoned cellar holes all over county awaiting to discover and perhaps a cache of gold coins?
[In Port Hope, the Smith home, built in 1866 and still a beautiful, elegant structure today, stood in the path of fire. It escaped the fire of 1871. When the Great Fire of 1881 came roaring through the Thumb, Mrs. William R. Stafford carried her prize possession, the family silver, out of the home and into the backyard, where she buried it to save it from destruction. The fire destroyed much of the town, including the Stafford mill, but the fire did not reach the home, and the silverware and other possessions were dug up and returned into their places in the home.]
