Vietnam War, 1970: CBS camera rolls as platoon comes under fire

Danged Jeff, almost wish you hadn't posted that clip. But, thank you, and I'm still here - though I'll probably not sleep well tonight.

I was in the 2nd chopper into LZ Spearhead with the 4th Infantry....

What I remember is getting as deep into the dirt in absolute terror as I could get. I went to sleep, but really believe I fainted from fear. I was gonna die. Rounds were coming in with only seconds between each incoming round....

But I woke up and it was over. Our Father blessed me.

Would you say that Platoon is accurate? Or what movie do you think is the best depiction of those times in Vietnam?

I don't know about accuracy .But My favorite is "Apocalypse Now".That movie showed the insanity of the entire situation. At the same time, the Big Wheels were boasting the fact that we could hit every inch of S. Vietnam w/in minutes by Naval fire or forward artillery bases or Air power....And What was the final outcome ?

Thank you, I needed a refresh on the reality of that "conflict".....!
I juggled cargo-loads of bombs on my aircraft carrier,
during the '60s there...so never saw that kinda fun...! :tongue3:

My vote would be Full Metal Jacket, Hamburger Hill, and especially We Were Soldiers .

Military Times top 10 list.

  1. Platoon (1986)
  2. Apocalypse Now (1979)
  3. The Deer Hunter (1978)
  4. Full Metal Jacket (1987)
  5. Good Morning, Vietnam (1987)
  6. Born of the Fourth of July (1989)
  7. Hamburger Hill (1987)
  8. We Were Soldiers (2002)
  9. Rescue Dawn (2006)
  10. Casualties of War (1989)

The US military didn't lose the war, it was feckless politicians capitulating to the commie anti-war crybabies.

Harry Summers,a distinguished historian and Korean and Vietnam War veteran related an incident that explains a lot.During a visit to Hanoi, Summers escort was a North Vietnamese Col. It became evident that they had opposed each others units at one time and Summers told the NVA,"you never defeated us on the battlefield". The NVA replied "that is true,it,s also irrelevant".in Summers, book On Strategy.

You know it, I know it, the whole freaking World knows it.I just didn't want to get tooooooo "political" here:tongue3::laughing7::BangHead:

I did come away with a free education through the GI Bill. So it wasn't all for naught. Otherwise I'd have been stuck in the cotton mills - which all went to China anyway....

Though I did awaken this morning with a jolt again. 50 years later.....

Maybe I need to get out of this thread - it's bringing it all back where I'd forgotten so much.....
