I have had this for a number of years. Found it in Brimfield, Mass.at the Big Antique outdoor show.
I have a guess at what it is, but I would like to find out more. It is 7 inches high by 8 inches wide.
pictured are four view. It has a small tank with a filling hole and I think a wick went in the lantern. I have had it called a number of things, what is your take on it? It has no maker marks.

Is it some type of early night light with the stump of tree being a match holder?

I'll buy that...

dg39, never seen anything like that..pretty cool though, I'd try firing her up..
I hate it when there are no marks....

... or an ashtray. The lantern stayed lit as Gyspy suggests, and the tree stump is the ashtray. It looks like you could rest a ciggy in there where there is alittle slot in the trunk.

If it has an ashtray and a small light....could it be an early version of what is now know as a cigarette lighter? .....although if it's old, it'd probably be called a stogie lighter!

How's this for a thought? Before fulmars/self-lighting matches a bunch of cedar or fatwood splits could be stored in the stump and then lit from the girl's lamp. Those could then be used to light pipes in a tavern or men's club. Just guessing.

Very nice.

"Is it some type of early night light with the stump of tree being a match holder?" Quote from Gypsy..

I like both those ideas. Anyone find anything similar?

Looks like the wick holder of the lantern is connected to the stump, so maybe a wick went all the way from the lantern into the stump which could then be filled with oil. Of course the stump would have had to come with a cover, presumeably lost. This would then be an effective night light. Just a thought.

I really like it but she only has four toes ???

Where is the wick turner? And the filling hole? I was bent on this being a courting or night lamp ,but then tried to figure out how they would turn the wick up to trim.....

When you are courting, you dont need to turn the wick up do you ??? ;D ;D ;D

God bless

Filling hole to the right of the stump looking down. Wick tube shiows in lantern.

I did not notice the way the tube went to the small tank at the bottom, and is separate from the stump...I guess that makes my last reply kind of erroneous.

I still believe that it is some king of night light though. The fact that it has no wick adjuster, just makes me think that it just used short wicks that would be burnt out shortly after you fell asleep. The wicks being stored in the stump.

Whatever it is, it's cool.
