Very Rare Colonial Two Piece Tomb Back Unusual Design

This weekend we hit up what we think might be a British Camp due to the relics that have come off this site. I actually dug this unique two piece colonial button. From what I have read this style of button usually had a pewter face. This one though did not. The design on it is very ornate. Was super excited to find it. Hated it wasn't military but glad to know that it is something unusual and rare.

That is highly unusual to find one with such an intricate design and in one piece. The faces of these buttons were not pewter, they were also tombac. Usually we only find the backs for some reason. I have probably found about a dozen backs for these type buttons, but only one front half.
Here are some pictures of typical back halves.


The front piece was soldered onto the back piece with no blow hole to release the gas.

Thanks for checking out my post. I knew it was special as my other buddies were finding backs but with no faces. One was dug with a face and when it came out the face just crumbled. So I know now how unusual this face is.

Agreed, whats rare is to get them still attached & decorated. Hate the word 'unique' being used, just bugs me especially when we know they mass produced them & even if it were a commissioned set, the word set is a clue.
But anyways it is a very rare find, so congrats.

I agree, a design like that would have been mass produced, or at least a good run of them, so at the time of manufacture, it certainly was not unique.

History in your hand, it's a beautiful thing. Man the longer I hang out here, the more difficult it becomes to not be a total jealous a-hole. I'd love to dig something even remotely close to that!! Excellent dig and thank you for posting it.

Nice one!!.. A while back I found a nice fancy two piece, As I was cleaning it, that face crumble as I was barely touching it. So it is hard to find a solid one..
