Ash from a coke oven ? Does it read all over the spectrum ( iron up to Silver Dollar maybe even OVERLOAD ) on your detector ? The ash here in Pa. will drive a detector crazy .

Reads right below nickel not too jumpy either.

Probably "coal clinkers". It is the left over junk (impurities) that won't burn up when you burn coal. Pretty common around old houses that were heated by a coal furnace. You had to clean them out occasionally and they usually just got thrown out in the yard. They will make your detector go crazy.
