I found this button recently on an old farm. I have been trying to figure out how old it is, and whether or not it is civil war related. The front of the button is too far gone to see anything. However, on the back, I have been able to make out "Warranted Superior" on the outer circle on the back, and the word "London" on the inner circle. There is another word on the inner circle, but I cannot make it out.

Any help would be appreciated!

I know nothing... but tried to get some words using some of the letters ('London' is obvious) - the word on the bottom... not sure: you can try something like this site to match words (with missing letters). suilline is what i came up with "Of or pertaining to a hog or the Hog family " - so, probably not!

Please don't be misled by my guessing... could it actually be 'warranted suilline'? Kinda like 'ASDA 100% Angus Beef!'... but from long ago.

It's definitely "superior". I can read it through a jewelers loupe.

Thanks for trying!

Yeah could be gilt. Should be easily enough to google with that much.

The backmarks probably say, "Warranted Superior Gilt (Gilt may be supposed to be inferred if it is not there)" "London". I would guess that it is circa 1810's-1820's. Nice early find!

Thanks! I've been all over Google trying to figure it out. I have found very little information. It's really awesome!

Thanks! I've been all over Google trying to figure it out. I have found very little surprisingly. But it's really awesome!

I love finding old button, they are in my top three favorite things to find. Many of my backmarked buttons don't produce any results online either, even with a clear readable description. Some button makers, especially ones without a company name printed on the button, are impossible to find. Once again, Nice find!

When I found it I immediately thought "Wow, this really old!" And it was day one on a new permission farm! I'll be hunting there for a while!

With buttons like that you can expect to find large cents, buckles, and maybe even Spanish silver. Good luck, Sounds like a great permission!

Thanks again. The place is fascinating. A family farm that dates back to the 1690's. I've only scratched the surface of this place. And it's keeping me up at night thinking about what lies below!
