I found this today at a location which has produced a lot of 1600s and 1700s coinage. It's very light, smooth, and has a cross or "x" on one side.

I'm lost on this one, any ideas?

Cheers!

Maybe a peroxide bath or electrolysis will reveal more detail. Can hurt anything at this point.....

The cross marking does look like it was done after the fact..kind of like counter stamped. It may be my imagination but I almost see a shield in the middle around the cross like a Brasil Reis coin (1700's--1800's).

You say it's very light and smooth.... I've seen knock-outs with X's like that in the center. Hope this is not the case here.
