I hope you can help with this plaque that I picked up today in a box of old coins.

The legend appears to read: "Andreas Crispus Patavinus A?r T M D Ant Candelabrus" or something similar.

I found this mention of Andrea Crispus on wikipedia which seems to fit, but I am sure this plaque is not 16th century, so what does it relate to?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrea_Riccio

That certainly looks to refer to a similar medal - but the extract cuts off half way through - very frustrating!

I get "puts it on the medal ascribed to him "Andreas...." and then the next line I get the tops of the letters only. Are you seeing more? Does the site require a login to view the full article?

That's brilliant - thanks Don! I still feel mine must be a 19th century copy. I can't be lucky enough to pick up an original 16th century medal!

Is it just me, or is yours made out of something other than bronze, as described in the book/shown in the picture on Wiki? It looks almost like lead (unless that's crusties on the surface not oxidation).

I am really not certain of the metal either. It is hard, and there is some copper content as there are some blue/green specks in the encrustation, but the patina is rather light for bronze.
The marks apparent in the picture are a very hard encrustation which is not giving in easily to a tooth pick. I still suspect a 19th century "grand tour" copy that has then been left in soil for a few years.
