I found a button that's slightly larger than a quarter and has great detail. I wonder how old it is or what it originally was for.

Congrats!!! That is a sharp button, that is awesome! Does it have any back Mark's on the back of the button? Thanks for sharing.I found a button that's slightly larger than a quarter and has great detail. I wonder how old it is or what it originally was for.
The back is pretty crusty but I'm going to clean the backThat's a cool button. A picture of the back would be helpful to get a date on it.

So it's likely from the late 1800's?Nice. It looks to be a "junk" boat, as used in China, Japan and other parts of the Orient. I would be sure it's a pictorial fashion button. Oriental imagery of a "Chinoiserie" nature was popular in the West for a long time and in the late 19th Century there was a surge of interest in all things Japanese, driven in part by performances of the hugely popular opera "Mikado" beginning in 1885.
I would think the button imagery is probably Japanese rather than Chinese and relates to that period in the last part of the 1800s when Japanese-themed buttons, brooches and other items were widely produced in the West.

I have a rotary tumbler that I clean my finds with. I'll see what comes out on thr back of anything. That would be my belief... very late 1800s. A view of the back might help, but fashion buttons like this frequently have no backmark that helps in dating.
