I found this bell today while detecting at an old house site that goes back to the very early 1800's.

It is cast brass or bronze, can't tell which. It stands 2 1/2" high and the mouth is 2 1/4" diameter. It had a iron clapper in it and there is rust remaining where it was attached and rotted off.

It has some very nice decorations on it with figures of an Angel, Swan, Owl and Lion. Under the figures is their names in Latin. I did find the same words on a web site that is a dictionary of the Anglo-Saxon language.

My wife thinks there is some significants to the figures on the bell but we haven't figured out what.

At any rate has anyone seen something like this before in bells? Any further information about it would be welcome.

Very exciting find indeed. Certainly a special purpose bell. Hope someone can provide some insight on orgin and use.

Sorry no info on the bell But it is Beautiful!!!!! WTG on that Find!!!!!!!!

Cygnus- Latin for swan, associated with water. Still used as a constellation.
Leo- Latin for lion, associated with fire. Still used as a constellation.
Oux- Latin combine for owl, associated with wind. Former Noctua constellation but was still being observed as a constellation in the 1800's.
Angelus- Latin for Angel, associated with the heavens and earth. Possible symbol for the "Angelus Bells".

.........not much help but a direction possibly.....seems almost elemental based.

Looks like a bell used in a religious ceremony European :dontknow: Nice find Dd60
