Does anyone know what this is. Found just north of York Town Virginia

Think I figured it out. Remeasured in mm. It’s 21 millimeters
The 8 gauge black powder shotgun uses a 21.2 millimeter slug
Someone said 10 gauge black powder shotgun but that uses a
19.69 millimeter slug.
I think it’s an 8 gauge slug.
Research says this gun was used late 19th century.
Thoughts?

Looks like a .50 cal. modern muzzleloader to me, but I am no expert by any means.

I see no riflings. If smooth bore, it doesn't look fired, but that is a chunk of lead!

I can't recall seeing anything that large in the CW bullet book. Curious.

Saw your other post. I think it is a slug for the older black powder 8 gauge shotgun.

Wow! The 4-bore elephant guns were that size (1" bore+/-) but I don't believe that style bullet.

That much lead has to be about 2,000 grains. Not something that would be shoulder fired.

I wonder if it was a "salesman sample" or demonstration item?

Sure be nice if you could measure it in thousands of an inch and weight in grains. Looks to be around 90 caliber but can;t tell without measurements.

Yeah .. I read the ruler wrong .. I thought it was a half inch, but I see now it is much larger.

In her other post she said it was 7/8" diameter but I doubt it was an accurate measurement. Even close to 7/8" is smaller than 8ga. Pretty close to 20mm which was/is an aircraft machine cannon round.

.50 cal=1/2", the OP slug is way fatter in diameter.
