This would be my biggest flat button ever.
Would love to know a possible age or any more info about it.
It was dug at a site where we have dug 1830's+ US half dimes, 1820's-1840's US Military buttons such as Dragoons, Navy, and Artillery.
This button is huge. Would it possibly go on a hat, is it a Dandy button, or is it more modern?
Could it be miltiary, or is it civilian.
Also i cant quite make the backmark. Looks like 3 letters and the last two look like LA.
I will have to try to get it cleaned up a little more later, but its getting late.
Thanks for looking.

Looks like you've dug what the Brits call a dandy button- anything larger than 33mm is generally 18th century. Your's looks to have retained some of the silver wash and is late 1700s. Civilian I'm afraid but a killer dig nonetheless

Thanks VMI. If it is indeed a dandy, it will be my first. i have seen them posted before, but iver never dug one. Its pretty crazy how big it is.
Got any tips for removing the black on the front. I was thinking lemon juice, but i dont have any lemons at the moment.
Oh, and i was just hoping maybe this thing might be military, because all the other buttons dug at this site were military. Wishful thinking.

Yes lemon juice, and it's very rare to have a makers mark, or in this case a makes stamp. So this one is quite special.

Pretty sure the back mark is "PLA" which I would assume to be an abbreviation for "Plated" as in silver plated. As Iron Patch posted it is very unusual for an 18th century button to have any sort of back mark.

Plenty of 18th century have marks, but most are very late 1700s, and not usually these large designed buttons.

I think you may have it on the PLA mark as it makes much more sense than a makers stamp not being solid silver.

Here is a scan from a page of The National Button Bulletin which shows another button with the "PLA"backmark - unfortunately no picture of the mark to compare but it is the correct era as the others posters indicated.
