Wood jar with lid. Looks like copper and brass detailed overlay.
Inscribed “87” on the inside

What do you guys think?

I'm thinking a tobacco humidor, but either I am wrong or it wasn't used.

Ok... I will weigh in on this...

IMO... this is a "decorative piece" ... I would almost bet... heh... that it is a Pier 1 Import piece.

Not knocking it... just a reality check may be needed and I am good at dodging those :P

Based on it's size, I'm too am thinking either a tea caddy or tobacco storage container. :icon_scratch:
It looks to be well-made, is there anything on the bottom?

The '87' is likely the makers reference number, so it might've been made as a decorative piece for export.
You can often find these types of pieces for sale at The Bamboo Company & Pier 1 Imports.

Nothing to note on the bottom.

I am appreciative of all input on this!
I feel I’m getting closer. Thumbs up!

Also would Pier 1 inscribe an “87” into the product?

Also looking at the item. (From my inexperienced perspective) the metal parts look hand made. It’s not perfect, and its shapes aren’t all equal

That's a nice piece.
The 87 would be from the lathe turner so he could keep the top and bottom matched.
The staining looks like an attempt to "age" the item to make it appear old.
A Pier One / Cost Plus type of decorative piece.. IMHO

The retailer wouldn't have inscribed the number, but the exporter or the maker of the item would have to denote the style for inventory purposes.
Please understand, I'm saying this is a new piece, as even 19thc pieces sold as tourist items had inventory numbers.
This may very well be a-one-of-a-kind-piece... if so, then why inscribe the '87?

Hand-made pieces like this have been produced for the tourist trade for hundreds of years and your looks to be a quality item.
I would be interested to know what type of wood it's made of, it looks to be oak?

Also, if you take a close look at the base, there's little to no wear on it.
This is a good indication that it's a 'newer' piece... if it was 'old', wear would be more evident. :icon_scratch:
