Very first post here will need help identifying

I took geology in college long ago so some things are familiar but wish I retained more!
This past month has been amazing, I received a bag full of rocks or gemstones, still learning which is which, and another person heard I was getting back into this and gave me their collection? I also had ordered a collection off of Amazon, pretty much tumbled? I like rough though, seems easier to identify?

I have been working hard with researching what is what and wow it can be tough! Do I need to buy a scratch plate for testing some of them?

I will have a lot to ask about, it will be a lot to post individually, any tips, thank you!!

(I am pretty sure of amethyst, sodalite, pyrite, quartz, some jasper, hematite, tiger eye,)

The fluorite, calcite, etc are hard for me? I have a lot more to post than what is pictured?

If you can keep the discussion rolling I'd keep my posts in this thread. The book NJearthman is calling for is an excellent start, a scratch plate *which is just a bit of unglazed porcelain tile or floor tile that you can pick up at a home improvement store* is useful for checking color, also a good hardness test kit. Its difficult to impossible to identify rocks and minerals from a picture so another good source are any local rock clubs or lapidary clubs around you. Good luck and good hunting.

If you can take some sharp, close up, well lit images of individual pieces you are stuck on and post them, you will likely get some good help on the ID's.

Had contacted local club, didn't hear back... it looks like on their site they focus on jewelry making and shows and etsy links of stuff people sell...I will keep looking for rockhounding buddies though

Forgot I had this, it?s the only one that has pink quartz? , the other green part, ?..
