Just so everyone is clear: I was not the one who found this, this was found by my friend MetalDetectingVermont

I took my friend to an early 1800's house for a 2 hour dig. He dug this really awesome button at about 6" down. At first when he showed me the button I said I thought it looked like a militia button, but when my friend cleaned it up he realized it said "Light Infantry." We know it is from the Civil War but we are unsure about it's rarity.

Here is the button, such a cool find!!

and here is a non-dug example:

I am wondering if any of you button experts on here could tell me what the rarity is and/or any other information about this amazing button. Thanks!!

Very nice button! I see non dug examples on Worthpoint that sold in the $100. range. Some more some less. I would say easily worth $75-100.

Rarity? Well I'd say out here where I live, it would be anywhere from extremely rare to non-existent. Really nice find.

Epic history. Epic.

Great button find. First one I've seen posted.

Alright, I'll have to tell my friend that, thank you

It certainly is a very historic and cool find! I believe this is the first one ever posted on Treasuenet, I did a broad search using the search tool and nothing like it came up

So far I've found through research that buttons like this were made 1842-1855, but were used during the Civil War and were worn by "Light Infantry flanking units." Most of the information I've found came from a page about state militia button on georgewashingtoninauguralbuttons.com
