is the bottom hollow or filled in? and does the top come off?

Top does not come off. The extra piece seems to seal the bottom. Entire item is hollow. I positioned bottom plate every which way and it does not whistle a bit.

Considered. but the way it hangs, most likely on a Neck Chain,
I would guess everything would fall out ?

I was thinking keychain or watch fob. But I don't get the impression that it is old enough to be a fob.

Most match safes are fully enclosed to keep matches dry. This piece has an open slot.

Can you slip dimes or pennies into the slot?

interesting find, id say by the ring on the top it was either on a necklace or keychain. i have never seen anything exactly like it .
but i did find a plastic item about the same size labeled " Great smokies National Park " and is was as i said plastic but had a metal insert , after i washed it up and got all the dirt out the only thing i could see it do was make a lound " CLICK " when you pushed the metal down. so i assumed it was a clicker noise maker .
my point is , it may be a odd thing that does not make sense ..lol

if it wasnt for the emblem on it id say it looks exactly like a razor blade dispensor ..but that makes no sense.

pics have been sent out to valley forge historical society, among others. I know it doesn't often mean much, but item was 8 inches deep, right next to 3inch deep wheats from the 30's. New pics:

nice pics. That slide in piece is odd , Because I would think it would
fall out due to Gravity

will it fit in the upper hole & stay ?

I agree but it sort of snaps in there and is tough to remove. It won't fit in the middle area unless I would apply extreme force and almost bend it.

It looks like a dispenser of some sort. Almost like a cigarette dispenser or matches. Like you would pull down the bottom part to get something out. It's a very neat find. Hope they get back toyousoon.

cigarette.jpgOne more guess: I can't seem to get away from the idea that this item is smoking related. Could it have been something that held and dispensed cigarette rolling papers? I've not had a lot of time to search, but the one pictured gives a general idea of what I'm trying to show. Notice the slot? The papers may have been loaded in the bottom and pulled through the slot. Realizing that the found one is much smaller, the papers would have had to have been folded in half. OR..could that slot once been a replaceable insert to strike matches on? In that case, I'll go back to my original idea of it being a match safe. :laughing7:
