I had my first new year's hunt yesterday, continuing my search of a 1756 home site. While I'm used to finding buckles, horse tack, and all sorts of iron relics, this was a new one for me. This looks like it may have been used as a pull or handle for something heavy due to its shear size, but the odd shape is definitely different from anything I've seen before. Any thoughts as to how this may have been used?

Never seen that shape before but I would think it is from a singletree or an ox yoke or some other "beast of burden" equipment.

Thanks for the logo compliment DC. My son recently graduated from the Virginia Military Institute and for the past four years I've proudly worn a VMI ball cap. My son teases me about this all the time. He also teases me about my passion for metal detecting. So after some brainstorming about how I could use the VMI initials, I landed on "Vintage Metal Investigations" and designed the logo you are seeing. After that, I waited on my son to tease me again about the cap. When he did, I replied "I will always wear this cap." Then he said, "but you didn't graduate from VMI"; to which I replied, "This is true, but I founded the company". He gave me the what the heck are you talking about look, and I said "Vintage Metal Investigations"! I thought he was going to laugh himself silly, but he loved it. Being a fellow Virginian, you know that VMI is considered to be nothing short of a national treasure. I have found this cap to be a "permission magnet". People always want to know my connection to VMI and that leads to conversation about family members that are VMI grads and about my being an Army veteran as well. Next thing you know, I've got permission to dig!
