I found this today is it military ??
Nice find. Yes, it looks like a horse's bridle rosette. There were several different font styles of the "US". Yours is definitely late 19th/early 20th century it looks like.

They were made for the military but lots were in surplus and used by farmers when they harnessed their horses and mules. i've found several varieties at old homestead sites here in Mississippi.
Generally, WWI rosette's were solid cast and featured a relief of The Great Seal and had a single bar attachment that the harness passed through.
Yours is the older style, especially considering the style font of the US and being of stamped brass with curvature hooks.

It isn't a bridle rosette. .. It is merely a harness-- decoration if you like that better than accoutrement -- that graced the backband and sometimes the tug/trace straps.
