Va. Red clay

Similar soil conditions here in GA. Yes, the clay seems to be more dense. Have found a lot of civil war stuff and the soil depth where it changes from the black dirt to the red clay. Have also found this true in old home yards as well.

same here in Tennessee. I found relics a few inches deep but always above or on top of the clay. So far have not found any in or under the clay.
 

Yep! It's the same here in Kentucky. I always find coins and relics above the clay layer. With the exception of graded areas on construction sites where the top soil and clay layers are jumbled.
